No accent, thank goodness, but it turns out that you didn't transcribe it quite correctly. The line is, "Any man is a fool who doesn't know how lucky he is to have you." Still ambiguous, still awkward, but the alternative, "Any man, who doesn't know how lucky he is to have you, is a fool," is also becoming a bit strained,at least when recited as dialogue, as "is a fool" recedes further from "any man."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2851981677644878233.post-15977748399530427222008-07-05T13:49:00.000-06:002008-07-05T13:49:00.000-06:00This construction goes by the name of "Extrapositi...This construction goes by the name of "Extraposition from NP" in the GS literature; it extracts a heavy constituent (typically a relative clause) from inside a complex NP (in the sense of the Complex NP Constraint, see Ross Constraints) and extraposes it to the end of the sentence. The input in this case would be
Any man who doesn't appreciate you is a fool.
Extraposition from NP is functionally like regular Extraposition in moving heavy constituents to a right-branching end position, but unlike it in moving from inside a complement, instead of moving the whole complement, and in not leaving a dummy (like it). As you noticed, it's rather marked, and the literature is contentious about its grammaticality as a construction.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
